Tour Helicopter Tail Rotor Failure Over Kauai — Ladd Sanger Secures Recovery for Injured Pilot
Ladd Sanger represented the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas 369FF tour helicopter that crashed in Haena on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, following an in-flight tail rotor failure. The aircraft, operating a sightseeing tour, experienced a sudden mechanical breakdown when components of the tail rotor system – including the blades and output shaft – separated mid-flight.
Witnesses reported hearing loud bangs and observing debris falling into the ocean before the helicopter began a controlled descent. The pilot executed an autorotation and attempted to cushion the landing in a nearby campground area. The crash resulted in one passenger fatality and serious injuries to others, including paralysis.
On behalf of the pilot, Ladd pursued product liability claims against the manufacturer arising from the catastrophic failure of the tail rotor assembly. The case resolved in a negotiated settlement to compensate for the pilot’s injuries, medical expenses and loss of income.
