LADD SANGER SETTLES ROBINSON R44 CRASH CASE LEADING TO FUEL SYSTEM REDESIGN

Ladd Sanger represented families and survivors in litigation arising from a Robinson R44 helicopter crash in which a survivable impact became fatal after the aircraft’s fuel system ruptured and ignited. The post-crash fire caused multiple fatalities and severe burn injuries.

The case focused on allegations that the helicopter’s fuel tank and related components were defectively designed and unreasonably susceptible to rupture under low-impact conditions. Plaintiffs advanced specific alternative design proposals, including improvements to the fuel tank structure, cap and fuel line system to better withstand impact forces.

The litigation resulted in a confidential settlement and contractual agreement with the manufacturer, Robinson. Robinson was compelled to adopt design changes closely aligned with those proposed by the plaintiffs, along with implementation of a retrofit program to replace the fuel system in existing aircraft, helping to reduce the risk of similar post-crash fires in the future.
