Reno Air Race Disaster – Ladd Sanger and Team Lead Compensation Effort for Victims and Families

Ladd Sanger represented multiple victims and families impacted by the catastrophic crash of a highly modified P-51D Mustang during the National Championship Air Races in Reno, Nevada. The aircraft broke apart mid-race and crashed into the spectator area, killing the pilot and ten spectators and injuring dozens more in one of the deadliest airshow disasters in U.S. history.

Investigations determined that structural failures in the aircraft’s tail assembly – combined with extreme speeds and untested modifications – led to a sudden pitch-up and loss of control, incapacitating the pilot before impact.

Ladd’s team served as lead counsel for the spectator survivors and families in establishing and administering the Reno Air Disaster Compensation Fund. Working to coordinate claims and recovery efforts, he helped secure and distribute $77 million in available insurance and personal funds to victims and their families in an expedited process.

In the aftermath of the disaster, Ladd and his team played a central role in organizing a comprehensive compensation framework to address the widespread loss and injury. Acting on behalf of all spectator claimants, the firm worked closely with the fund administrator to develop and implement a process that ensured equitable and efficient distribution of funds.

The compensation program was completed in less than a year, providing critical financial recovery to victims and families without the need for prolonged litigation. The effort also coincided with broader safety recommendations for air racing events, including changes to course design, aircraft inspection protocols, and operational safeguards aimed at reducing risks to spectators.
